Tatong Heritage Origin
The Tatong Heritage Group was formed at a public meeting at the Tavern, Monday July 5th 2004.  Fifteen people attended, a very good turn out of our small district population.
The group was initiated by Elaine Brogan, a relative new comer to Tatong, who has had a strong association with historical groups in Melbourne.
Elaine and prominent local historian Greg Kirk conducted the meeting.

Committee as elected at inaugural meeting, July 5th 2004:

Elaine Brogan

Vice President

Greg Kirk

Secretary

The first Annual General Meeting of the group was held on October 24th 2005, with a good turn-out. Elaine Brogan, President, reported:

It is with much pleasure that I give my report to you tonight. It is hard to believe that 12 months have past since our first meeting. Much has taken place…

  • Our web page
  • Railway signage erected and bogie wheels set in place ready for the official launch
  • The photograph collection is growing and currently being entered onto disc form.
  • Displays have been erected in the library, which proved to be popular in town.
  • In the Shadow of a Drought get-together was a huge success, and is ongoing with talk and tales on the ABC radio, thanks to Melanie Sims for her support and interest.
  • Grants have been applied for, with two out of the three being successful
  • The society become Incorporated
  • Displays at the local market, the Molyullah fair and for Australia day in Benalla
  • Participation in the Benalla festival street parade
  • Talk and presentation for our nomination in the tidy towns awards.
  • Supporting our local school when it looked like it may close after 115 years
  • Working with the Recreation committee to help plan their 100 years
  • The Kelly film night at the tavern for our Australia day celebrations.
  • Historical features in the Tattler.
  • Guided tour given to a Melbourne based historical society.
  • Putting together our Historical calendar
  • Display at Riverview for St. Patrick’s Day
  • Participating in the family history day at Mulwala
  • Participation in the Good Friday appeal, walk and dine at Bells peak.
  • Regular coverage in the Ensign.

So, you can see that the THG have been very busy and much as been achieved. I believe the THG will continue to thrive, as we discover more and more of our local history.

Finally, I would like to say thank you to the Committee for the support and the hard work you have put in and also to our members and friends for your continued support and contributions. Without you the THG could not continue.

Elaine Brogan

Hon, President.

Meeting Dates
Happened Meetings

Monday October 25th 2004
Thirteen people attended the meeting, and four apologies were received. The bank account is being set up. A presentation is being planned to the Benalla Council Planning Committee, requesting a site inspection. The Benalla Council were sent a letter pointing out there would be no cost to them for the project planned.
The fund-raising calendar was in progress, and had been checked for correct placement of dates. Andy suggested suggested the Tatong Village Market dates should be on the calendar.
Plans were made for a raffle at the December market.
Greg said he was getting no joy from the DSE regarding blackberries growing in the timber tramways in the Tatong hills. Les MacLean will help chainsaw wood growing over the tracks.
Elaine hadn't much joy fro the Tourism Advisory Committee, where she was trying show the beauties of Tatong.
Elaine had been in contact with the National Trust about cleaning the Hume and Hovell monument on the Tolmie road.

Monday August 2nd 2004
Attended by 11 people in the Tavern beside a warm fire. Both Elaine Brogan and Greg Kirk did their homework since the last meeting and reported on a number of actions including:- A display to be held at the coming Tatong Village Market on August 7th. Also a display  to be put in the Benalla Library showcase.
Apparently the Tatong Football Club history booklet is still available for sale. Elaine made seemingly vain attempts to get funding under the 150th anniversary of rail celebrations.

Various historical installations and memorials will be made in the near future which include moving the former Landcare display shelter into Tatong Township, possibly near the Total Fire Ban sign, near the crossroads below the hall. Also a rock marker with a plaque and train wheels in the Triangle of Mitchell and newly named Tatong Moorngag Rds. This will commemorate the railway station site nearby. Another project is a memorial at the site of Karn, Mallum, and Lima railway stations. (Stopping off points). Further areas of interest are local schools of which there were many. At the market on the 7th Greg Kirk comprehensive display of photos maps and memorabilia were on display. How fortunate that Greg began to collect and look after these items before it became too late.

The next meeting of THG will be at the Tavern 8.00pm Monday 30th August. Meetings will be held on the 4th Monday of every month.
The THG would like to recover the original signs Tatong  station for display.
