William Henry Robinson etc  -  Photographer, Bendigo  - A collection of 40+ photographs etc probably from around 1900

William Henry Robinson

Photographer, Bendigo

William Henry Robinson was born on the 7th February 1864, Carpenter Street, Sandhurst (now Bendigo), the son of Henry Robinson and Eliza Graham. Henry was born at Oldham, Lancashire and Eliza was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

William Henry married Mary Ann Martin who was born 27th June 1858, daughter of Richard Nicholls Martin and Nanny Jane Trengove.  Richard was born in Chacewater, Cornwall and Nanny Jane in Gwennap, Cornwall.

William was a well known photographer in Bendigo.  He commenced as an apprentice to Nicholas White, whose studio was in Mundy Street, Bendigo.  On the death of Nicholas, William took over the business and later married the widow of Nicholas.

He lived in Garsed Street and, as can be seen, never moved from the area in his life. He was the official photographer for the Bendigo Advertiser for many years and took many photos of early Bendigo.

He died from heart failure on the 21st September, 1920 at Mundy Street.

THE ORIGINALS WERE KINDLY DONATED AND SCANNED FROM A COLLECTION OF A GRANDSON, WILLIAM (BILL) R. PHILLIPS.

CORNISH PIONEERS OF BENDIGO

(Compiled by Leanne Lloyd)

This is an attempt to document the many Cornish born pioneers who spent time in Bendigo at

some stage in their life. We have tried to find as many names a possible but realise that this database is only the tip of the iceberg. The criteria we set when compiling this database was to record the names and biographical information of as many Cornish born pioneers as possible. The person should be born in Cornwall and have spent a period of time (no matter how short) in Bendigo to qualify. Where possible I have endeavoured to record the names of parents and year and place of birth in Cornwall. The name of spouse/s is included and year of marriage. If that spouse is also Cornish born then they too will have a record in their own right. Dates of death if known and place of death if outside the Bendigo area is included when known. The children born to the marriage are also documented in some cases so that further Cornish bloodlines can be established. If the information has been given by a family member or researcher then they are identified and information given about them for further contact if necessary. Thank you to all who have made a contribution to this database, in particular Ruth Hopkins for sharing with me many years of her research and interests in the Cornish of Bendigo and beyond.

Please note:

The place names and names of people given in this database are recorded as they are written in the records. There are many variations and it is up to family members to ascertain the correct spellings and to determine which spelling is the correct one. I have given the information as it was found and recognise that some entries will contain inconsistent or incorrect data but it is beyond my control in most cases.
