The 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot was
formed in part due to the demonstrated marksmanship and utility
of American militia units during the American War of Independence.
The decision to experiment with a regiment-sized rifle unit
had been taken by January 1800. Colonel Coote Manningham formed
a unit known as the Experimental Rifle Corps in the spring of
1800, and commenced a period of intensive training of troops
drawn from many different regiments. Three of its companies
took part in a hastily improvised amphibious expedition of 13,000
men against the great Naval base of Ferrol in north-west Spain.
Here, on the 25th of August 1800 they covered the
landing, and after the place was found to be impregnable, the
subsequent re-embarkation. The anniversary has ever afterward
been recognised as the birthday of the 95th Regiment
- as the rifle unit was named when incorporated into the army
list in 1803. In 1816 the 95th became part of the
Rifle Brigade and their lineage descend to the modern Royal
Green Jackets. |

The Australian battalion, 2nd 95th, was formed
in 1996 in Victoria, with headquarters in Melbourne. The greater
Melbourne area is home to a solid core of members with others
residing in country regions and cities throughout Australia.
The unit is in close contact with fellow Rifle units overseas.
We have a force of approximately 20 uniformed riflemen, several
uniformed cadets, and other family and partners suitably costumed
for the period. |

The 95th train to fight in skirmish pairs, independent
from the battle line and, possibly, their officers. The "green
jackets" are usually deployed scouting in advance of
the red-coated line regiments, or skirmishing in the fashion
of light infantry.
Each man covers his partner while he loads, and when ready,
uses his Baker rifle's superior range and accuracy
to pick off the enemy (especially officers) from a distance.

The 95th's historical tactics show their true
worth when manouvering in a tight space, like the village shown
above (Old Sydney Town), allowing individual riflemen to use
what cover they find, or moving though obstacles and rough ground
while still maintaining unit coherency . |
