Recognition for Women Building Communities from Diann Rodgers-Healey,Australian Virtual Centre for Leadership for Women (CLW) www.leadershipforwomen.com.au

TO DO: ARE YOU A SELF-APPOINTED LEADER? - The Australian virtual Centre for Leadership for Women (CLW) at www.leadershipforwomen.com.au is inviting women who have developed self-initiated projects for the community to nominate themselves for the 2009 national Leadership Achievement Award for Women.

PRO-CHOICE REQUEST - If you can, please respond to this request from Pro-Choice about the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s report on abortion law presently in State parliament. http://prochoicevic.org.au:80/node/4

We sent this: To the Honorable Member, I beg you to allow the women of Victoria to have access to affordable, accessible abortion by removing it altogether, once and for all, from the criminal code.

Abortion is not a crime. It should not be subject to conditions other than those imposed on any medical treatment.

To those opposing the Bill and seeking to weaken it with conditions, we support Senator Zakharov when she wrote directly to the Archbishop of Sydney, the Acting President of the Australian Episcopal Conference in the 1980's:

'I share your concern with the human rights of every human being, but do not accept your definition of 'human being'. I value the rights of women to control their own lives and the right of every child to be wanted and properly nurtured above the rights of a small collection of cells which may be a potential human being but is not, in my view, 'a human being'. ... I regard my 'commitment to justice and human rights' as demonstrably as realistic and strong as any supporter of the so-called 'Right to Life' view.'

Thank you,

Yours sincerely,
Geraldine Robertson,
Secretary

"It is very important that women have some view of what is going on in their communities and in the world, so they are able to articulate their thoughts on injustices. We need more women who become known." Edith Morgan
