Our aim is to connect with industry and to provide employment and training opportunities to maximise Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders development within the music industry.

Songlines in Victoria is an Incorporated Aboriginal Association that has been established to provide assistance in all aspects of the music and performing arts industry to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians performers, managers and technicians.

Songlines represents a major initiative by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers and arts works to build the infratructure and support mechanisms to provide an indigenously controlled spearhead into the music industry.

Education and Training

Basic Music Industry Skills (BBMIS)

We are currently delivering modules of Basic Music Industry Skills, a National accredited Music Course for young unemployed and long-term unemployed Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders in Victoria.

The courses comprise over a period of 20 weeks, including a 4 week industry work placement.

Industry Advice and Liaison

Songlines enjoys a high profile within the music industry. The interests of Aboriginal and Islander musicians are represented on the board of the Victorian Rock Foundation, AUSMUSIC, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, and some State Music Industry Associations. Songlines has been asked to advise latrobe, Monash, and Melbourne Universities, National Campus Activities organisation, ABC Television, ABC Radio, 3CR Community Radio, Melbourne Theatre Company, Arts Industry Training Board, Mushroom Records, Sing Song Studios, hot House Studios, Metropolis Studios.

Resourcing other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music Associations

Songlines receives many requests from both fledgling and well established Aboriginal and Islander Music Associations for advice on sourcing funds assistance, letters of support for various projects, assistance with writing submissions and advice on the appropriate legal and industrial specialists.

Information about APRA, MACOS, the Musicians Union, Arts/Law Referral Centre, AUSMUSIC and ARIA is disseminated by Songlines.

Tour Networking

Songlines is one of the first contact points for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who intend to visit and perform in Melbourne and Sydney. Songlines puts them in contact with other local Aboriginal Torres Strait Island artists who may share a concert or offer support to them.
