The New Crossing Place

(Click on this picture for a larger version.)
New crossing placeMajor Mitchell crossed the Goulburn River near Tahbilk (south of Nagambie) on his return from Portland in 1836. This location became known as Mitchellstown. (Michelton Wineries are now established in the vicinity).

This became the crossing place for settlers and traffic to Sydney until 1839.

The New Crossing Place shown in this photo was established at what is now Seymour, providing a crossing by punt in the years 1839 to 1863. Settlement at this location was taking place in 1839, and Seymour was gazetted as a Town in 1844.

In 1863 a low-level bridge was established a few metres upstream from the present Old Goulburn Bridge. This was a Toll Bridge until 1873, and it remained in service until 1893.

The Old Goulburn Bridge, pictured at right, was built in 1892/3 and replaced the low-level one in 1893.

Heritage BridgeIt carried all the Hume Highway traffic until it was taken out of service in October 1967, being replaced by a concrete bridge further upstream that accessed the re-location of the Hume Freeway Seymour By-pass.

The Old Goulburn Bridge was heritage listed in 2006, and is incorporated into the local Heritage Walking Trail.

This Trail is accessed at the New Crossing Place Lions Park and continues upstream to the Railway Bridge.
