Prizes and Awards

Competition/Exhibition 2006

In addition to the normal 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for each category for Novice and Open,
the following will apply for the 2007 competition/exhibition:

Achievement Award;
This will be judged on the most improved
or any other criteria as determined by the Committee.

Vice Presidents Award;
This year it will be judged as the Best Novice “freehand turning
from pieces entered into categories A to N”.

Presidents Shield;
Will be the item judged as 1st
in the open category of F Spindle turned item.

Best in Show;
For this competition it will be known as
“Best Freehand Turned Item in the Show”
and will be selected from the 1st place items in the open section, categories “A to N”.

 

Competition Rules

Categories and Definitions

A     Item with natural edge

B     Bowl up to 200mm Opening must be greater than 50% of max dia & overall height must be less than max dia.

C     Bowl over 200mm As above

D     Platter A plate exceeding 300mm diameter with its height not more than 1/10th the max dia.

E     Miniature item/set Must fit inside 50mm cube.

F     Spindle turned item The majority of components must be turned with the grain running parallel with the axis of the lathe and its length must be greater than its maximum dia.

G     Novelty Item

H     Matched/Identical pair Must be identical in design, size & material.

I     Turned item including other materials.

J     Vase Height must be more than the max dia.

K     Lidded container

L     Clock

M     Laminated/built up

N     Hollow form Must be hollowed through an opening, which is less than 1/5th of the max dia. If piece has been joined, the largest join will be considered to be the opening through which the piece has been hollowed.

O     Artistic or Sculptural

P     Ornamental Material not confined to wood.

Q     Turned item including a mechanical device, pens, etc.

R     Miscellaneous Items that do not fit any other single category ( will not be judged if the piece will meet criteria of another category). Pieces with a mixture of other category criteria will be accepted as miscellaneous, as will pieces turned using other than free hand turning. (includes the previous category T, models including turned parts )

S     Turned item using other materials This category is for pieces turned using less than 80% wood.

 

Notes

1.     All pieces entered into categories A to N must clearly demonstrate the use of hand turning skills, with the lathe playing a major role in the making process, contain at least 80% wood, or wood products, and be turned free hand on a woodturning lathe. Functional materials to complete the exhibit are acceptable, ie, clock mechanisms, pepper mills, electrical switch, tapestries etc.

2.     Each member will be limited to two pieces in any one category. They may enter in as many categories as they wish.

3.     An exhibitor who wins a first place in any category as a novice will in future competitions be eligible only in the open section.

4.     Eligible exhibits, are those exhibits that have not been entered into any other competition at any time, and that have been made since the last Guild competition.

5.     Embellishments (painting carving etc) to finish the exhibit must be completed by the entrant

6.     Members who have in the past won first prize in any competition at any location, or who produce work specifically for sale to the public are to enter their work in the open section.
