P.A.D.D.believes...

  • that the only realistic way to significantly reduce the carnage on our roads is for all State Governments to adopt a ZERO Blood Alcohol Concentration level for all drivers, irrespective of age or driving experience.

  • that if penalties for culpable drink driving were made tougher, including the immediate removal of offending drivers from our roads, there would be fewer drink driver tragedies.

Blood Alcohol Concentration

The Blood Alcohol Concentration (or BAC) is the amount of alcohol present in the blood, measured in grams per 100 millilitres of blood. A BAC of .05 means there is.05 of a gram of alcohol in each 100 millilitres of a person's blood.
In Australia, the legal BAC limit for most drivers is .05. Some drivers are restricted to a zero BAC limit.

Effects on Driving

It could take very little alcohol to reach the legal BAC limit of .05
Alcohol affects driving or riding ability in three major ways:-
  1. It reduces your ability to do more than one thing at a time.
  2. It increases your confidence and amkes you less inhibited so you are more likely to take risks.
  3. It relaxes you so that you are more likely to fall asleep at the wheel.
Regular drinkers are often the worst at estimating if they are within the legal limit - because they drink a lot, they tend to nelieve they can hold their liquor. But people with a high tolerance to alcohol still register high BAC levels, no matter how they feel.
Coffee, cold showers, exercising or using a breath freshener will not reduce your alcohol level. Your body takes at least one hour to metabolise one standard drink; there is no other way.
