How we help
The Outer East Support Group is a voluntary organisation committed to the care and support
of people living with HIV/AIDS. Our work covers the outer eastern region of
Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia extending from Ringwood, Croydon, Knox and Lilydale to FerntreeGully and beyond.
The Outer East Group is part of a state-wide network of groups all working to enable people with HIV/AIDS to live as independently as possible. The group is part of the Support Program of the Victorian Aids Council.

The Outer East group has about 40 members - men and women of all ages, interests and backgrounds. While members may be personally involved for different reasons or motives, we share the common purpose of helping, in various ways, those living with HIV or AIDS.

Outer East assists clients by way of care teams comprised of specially selected and trained volunteers. Care teams are established when a person living with HIV or AIDS finds they need more help than their immediate family of friends can provide. Care teams usually consist of between two and six people although the size of teams can be varied to meet the level of support needed by the client. For very ill clients, around-the-clock care is provided, often in conjunction with the Royal District Nursing Service and other agencies. The time commitment in being on a care team is determined by the volunteer and can range from a weekly social visit to more regular contact.

The range of assistance given includes social and emotional support with visits to the client in their home or at hospital; practical help such as shopping, house cleaning and gardening; transport to and from hospital or medical appointments and hands-on nursing care.

Not all members of Outer East are on care teams. While some are ready to join a team if the need arises, many have chosen to contribute their time and talents in other ways such as fund-raising, organising social activities and administration. Volunteer drivers are regularly needed to transport clients to and from hospital during the day and at weekends.
There are substantial personal benefits in being part of Outer East: the feeling of directly helping someone, learning new skills, sharing ideas, making things happen, being part of a team and meeting people with a similar outlook.

Volunteers set their own level of involvement which can range from a few hours a month to multiple responsibilities requiring an extensive commitment.
