Robert Rizzo, BMus(Repertoire)(VCA), DipEd(Melb)
Robert Rizzo started learning the Trumpet with Kevin Morgan,
(Scots Guards Trumpeter), at Mazenod College, aged 12. Robert was apprenticed into Brass Bands
early on, playing Soprano Cornet with Ringwood Brass Band (1992), and Oakleigh City Band
(1992 – 1996).
Showing natural flare for performance, he won his solo competition debut, the V.B.L.
U/19 Trumpet Championship in 1993, adjudicated by Geoffrey Payne, and in the same year, the
Royal South Street U/19 Trumpet Championship, at the age of 14.
Victorian A Grade Brass Band's were quick to snap up Robert's talent, as he went on to play
Cornet with Hawthorn City Band (1996 – 1998) and Footscray–Yarraville City Band (2001),
competing at the Australian National Brass Band Championships.
Whilst teaching Brass in North Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales, Robert was
appointed Musical Director of Corowa Border District Band from (2003 – 2004), at the birth
place of Australia's Federation.
Upon return to Melbourne, Robert joined Moorabbin Brass Band (2004 – 2005), playing Solo Cornet
and Soprano Cornet, winning the V.B.L. Open Soprano Championship in 2005, adjudicated by Simon
Kirwin.
Robert joined Kew Band at the end of 2005, competing at the Australian National Brass Band
Championships and the New Zealand Brass Band Championships on Solo Cornet in 2006.
Robert is delighted to be appointed as Musical Director of Oakleigh City Band.
