EXCURSION
REPORT A group of 8 arrived at the Public Records office by various means to see over this great facility. Unfortunately as forklifts were working we were not able to see the repository but we did get an overall understanding of its workings and the files that we were wanting to see in connection with our area, are going to be copied and sent on to us. One interesting piece of information was that the use of digital cameras is allowed (no flash) and that would be a worthwhile investment for anyone wanting to do research there. However
the afternoon visit to Rose Chong’s Theatrical Costumes more than made up for
any disappointment felt with PRO. The site in a former old bluestone pub in
Fitzroy was of interest in itself but our wonderment grew as we went from room
to room full of strange and old (and in some cases reminiscences of our youth)
pieces of clothing, hats, wigs, footwear etc. We saw the workrooms, the laundry,
and the basement they didn’t know they owned until the floor moved and then we
were invited into their adjoining home to have a ‘cuppa’ before we set off
for home. Thank you, Rose. NEXT
EXCURSION We
have planned a visit to Campbelltown for October 11th leaving from
the courthouse at 1.30. The old buildings at Glengower estate have always been
of interest and although we will only be looking in from the road, we have lots
of interesting information and photos of it as well as the Black Duck Hotel and
the 3 graves in the nearby paddock. FAMILY
HISTORY EXPO AT BALLARAT Ballarat
is in the news this year as it is the 150th anniversary of Eureka.
The theme for the Expo is “1854 Eureka and all that!” Our Society will be
there on both days with our data in books and on computer to cater for the
people who want to know more about Newstead or family members who lived here. It
is a lot of work for the 4 or 5 members who give up their weekend for the cause
but it is also very interesting and a chance to meet up with other like- minded
people and see how other Societies work. GARAGE
SALE AND PARTY A
reminder to all our members to come and join us at the courthouse on Saturday
night October 16th at 6.30. Just bring a small plate of food to
share, a drink if you wish and enjoy an evening relaxing and enjoying each
other’s company. Earlier
in the day we will have our garage sale in Wyndham Street so hopefully we will
be celebrating making lots of money for the Society. PHOTOS The
postcards from 2 of our members of the coach loaded with Chinese on their way to
the goldfields has been of interest to all and particularly to a person doing
her PHD. She visited us and viewed the postcards and also our photos of the now-
gone Newstead Hotel. It certainly seems that the photo could well have been
taken in Lyons Street Newstead, as the sign and lamp on the hotel seem the same
as the ones that can be seen in the photo. We also have been lucky to have 2
other interesting photos donated to our Society. One is of the railway in a time
perhaps around WW1 and another photo seems to be taken in Cemetery Road again
perhaps in the 1920s or 30s.
