SEPTEMBER 2001 NEWSLETTER (Apologies
for getting the September newsletter in October – school holidays have
something to do with it. We have an arrangement for doing our photocopying at
reduced rates at our local school so it is economically justified to wait until
the school holidays are over. Another reason could be that the secretary has
been having a holiday with her family in Queensland!) OUR SOCIETY GET-TOGETHER Thanks
to the thirty or so people who attended on the night of September 15th at the
Courthouse. Our room was transformed an open fire, candles, flowers and the
table of delicious food and drink. Alan Burgess gave an account of the
achievements that we had attained over recent times before. Peter Skilbeck
presented Liz Coady with a Life-membership for her efforts for the society. Liz
then was momentarily stuck for words as a painting by Karen Pierce of Liz’s
home in Newstead for the past several years, the former Devonshire store, was
given to her. Peter pointed out Liz’s work in the greater Newstead community
as well as the many systems within our Society that she has been responsible for
setting up. It was pleasing to have Melbourne members as well as former members
there to convey our thanks to Liz and enjoy the conviviality of the occasion.
The success of the evening has made several of us propose that this be an annual
event, Having a get-together in the evening in winter in the comfort of our
lovely courthouse, seemed to he more conducive to lingering conversations than a
daytime lunch in Rotunda Park at Christmas. NEXT EXCURSION Jack
Polinelli will lead us into the Muckleford Forest on Monday 29 October leaving
from the courthouse at 1.30. We will go to the remains of the Young Australia
mine that Jack has led us to before and then to another nearby area that is not
mentioned in David Bannear’s book but where there are the remains of
considerable mining activity There is also a good geographical feature that Jack
calls the Great Wall of Muckleford! MARKET
DAY Our
next market is on November 17th at Rotunda Park. As you are aware, we
hold 2 markets per year, one in March and one in November. The November one is
our main money earner for the year and as on previous occasions, we are holding
a raffle for our famous Christmas hamper. In this newsletter, you will find
attached a book of tickets for this that we would be very pleased if you could
sell. Tickets are 50 cents each. The raffle will be drawn at noon on the day of
the market. Donations
of suitable things to go in the hamper are also needed... shortbread, nuts,
serviettes, Christmas crackers, drinks etc. For the market itself, we need
helpers (!), cakes, produce, plants or any odds and ends that will sell. FAMILY HISTORY EXPO In
the last newsletter, mention was made of this event at St Aquinas College Mair
Street Ballarat. This is an event run by Central Highlands Historical Societies
each year. The date given was wrong. The correct date is October 27 and 28 10am
to 4pm daily. Our society will be there and help in manning our display on
either of the dates would he appreciated. ZETTA FLORENCE This
business in Fitzroy specialises in selling products such as acid free albums
etc, to be used in storing and conserving things of value such as old photos,
documents or textiles. We have their new catalogue and some members intend to
buy for their own use. If anyone is interested, a combined order might he
possible. Historical society members get a 10% discount, "GOLD" There
are many events connected with the celebration of the Vic 150 Gold celebrations.
On Friday October 12 walkers on the "Off to the Diggings” walk arrive at
Elphinstone at about 1.30pm with an evening performance of the Off to the
Diggings play followed by a concert and bonfire. On Saturday October 13 the
walkers will depart from the Expedition Pass reservoir at about l2.30pm arriving
at Castlemaine Camp Reserve at about 3.15. The Thompsons foundry band will play
and again a performance of the play at 6.30pm before an evening concert at
7.30pm. There are displays in the Market building and a Camp to City exhibition
in the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum. In the museum in
Melbourne, ”The Seductive Treasures of Gold and Civilisation” exhibition
continues until October 21. I have heard that this is not to he missed and I
intend to go in the next week or so. Let me know if anyone else wants to come. CALENDAR:
