REPORT ON EXCURSION

Our trip to Maldon to see Carman’s Tunnel was great! The guides had a busy day with groups from Probus Clubs and children from Derby Hill also on site. However, Ross Suter, a life member of our Society, made sure that we were well looked after. The thought of entering the Tunnel was a bit disconcerting but we had a 99% success rate! The history of the tunnel is a fascinating one with almost no return on the heartbreaking effort while over the road at the North British mine, an incredible amount of gold was being found and fortunes made. The site itself and the explanation by the guide conveyed a wonderful sense of the unique history of our area and we can recommend it to those who haven’t seen it or who would like to be take their visitors.

The cup of tea that followed and the stroll around the site of the North British made us want to return to see more of Maldon’s history so we intend to go again to Maldon next month. The time will be Monday afternoon from the courthouse in Newstead at 1.30 on November 7th. As this will be our last excursion for the year, we will linger on at our “cuppa” for an end of the year break up. Please come and join us.

MARKET DAY

Here we go again – it is time for our November Market Day. The date is Saturday November 19th of November, 8.30 till noon at Rotunda Park Newstead. This is our main fund- raiser for the year so we are hoping for a successful day. As in the past, we will be raffling a fine Christmas Hamper that will contain home- made Christmas pudding and cake as well lots of goodies to make the festive season go well. Included in this newsletter is a book of raffle tickets (total cost $5) so that those members who can’t be there to offer physical presence and help on the day, can contribute as well. To those who can come, we certainly welcome another pair of hands to man our stall. To those of you who haven’t been, we have our site around the electric barbeque and from an early hour sell hamburgers and sausages – the cheapest and best around. As well we have morning teas, homemade cakes, the ‘white elephant’ and produce stall. Drop in any things that you want to get rid of to the courthouse. Stallholders pay $5 and the owner of a lucky ticket will win a Giselle Neall cake. (If you haven’t tasted Giselle’s cooking, you haven’t lived!).  The day becomes a real community get-together.

MISS ADELAIDE MACKIE

In the past weeks we were made aware that the death had occurred of Miss Adelaide Mackie. Miss Mackie has in recent times, made a bequest to our Society of her collection of books. Although not many of us had met Miss Mackie we have great reason to be grateful to her. So it was with gratitude that we met to remember her. Thanks to Rosalie Jacobs who has put together and given us memories and photos of Miss Mackie’s life.

TELFER FAMILY

The courthouse was opened yesterday afternoon for members of the Telfer family to gather. During one of our visits to Ballarat Family History Expo we gave information about the Telfer family who lived in the area during the 1850s. Subsequently the family has followed up with more research and then yesterday they gathered to see the headstone that they have erected over the unmarked grave of their forebear, Robert Telfer and his wife Elizabeth who on her husband’s death at an early age, remarried William Mulholland of Strangways. Many of the group had not met before; some had travelled from interstate. They were very grateful for our assistance in providing information and also for being able to gather at the courthouse. For our part, we gain information in return. In this case it will be in the form of a booklet about the Telfer family, which adds to our overall picture of the Newstead area in times past.

ACQUISITION

The Society has been pleased to be given the records of the Newstead Butter Factory by Ron McBain, the last manager of the factory and still resident in Newstead. They consist of all the minute books, share registers etc. They are a wonderful acquisition and coincidently come exactly 100 years after the Butter Factory began.
