BEQUEST Our Society has been given a valuable collection of 3,000 books. Our benefactor’s generosity is quite overwhelming and our thanks have been expressed to her most sincerely. A great deal of time and effort is going into transporting and cataloguing and thanks are expressed to those who have helped in this regard. PARTY How nice it was to welcome some Melbourne members to Newstead to share in this evening of celebration! The courthouse is a lovely venue and the open fire, candles, flowers and the spread of food contributed to a great night. The members usually assemble to work and it was nice to put aside the chores for once and enjoy each other’s company. GARAGE SALE Earlier in the day the Garage Sale took place. A few suggestions have been noted if another one is contemplated but on the whole the day was successful. Approximately $250 was made and the quantity of goods to take to November’s Market Day has been substantially reduced. Thanks go to the members who contributed to the saleable items – in particular Irene and Bob Cocking and to Janet and Jim Trudgeon at whose home the sale took place. EXCURSION TO CAMPBELLTOWN The visit to Campbelltown was a good chance to learn about the history of this area of the old Shire of Newstead. The recently completed Heritage Study of Newstead provided the basis for the information, which included the Glengower, homestead, the three nearby graves associated with Glen Gower’s history, the Black Duck Hotel and the Campbelltown cemetery. Mention was made of 2 other old hotels since demolished, the mining activity in the area and the families associated with the locality. The history told of the naming of the town after Campbell of Glengower and how he and his young son who drowned aged 9 years were buried at the cemetery and the headstone was of imported Scottish granite. The cemetery was impressive for its location and appearance. FILM OF THE DREDGE At last we have decided on the format, ordered the DVD and it has been delivered. We now have a copy of 2 short films by Mr McGeorge, manager of the dredge. The first runs for 16 minutes and shows the operation of the dredge and the other goes for 2 minutes and is of a family picnic. An invitation from Maureen and Maurie Heagney to show it on their DVD has been accepted with thanks and the time and date if you want to see it is – Monday November 8th at 2pm at Heagney’s place at Sandon. Alternatively meet at the courthouse at 1.30 and we will carpool. FAMILY HISTORY EXPO AT BALLARAT This event during the weekend of October 2 and 3 and the theme for this year’s Expo was based on 1854 and the events that took place 150 years ago. Of course the main one celebrated in Ballarat was the Eureka Stockade. However our Society decided to concentrate on the 150th anniversary of Cobb & Co as that was more relevant to our area. Congratulations to the Bungaree Society whose display won the prize. Although there is not a large number of visitors attending, those who do are very interested in the displays of the various societies and in particular if they can find out about their forbears. Our computer index of the local newspapers is of great help and although the number of people we help on the day is not large, their gratitude is considerable. Thanks to the members who worked to ensure our Society was represented there on the two days. MARKET DAY November 20th will soon be here and it is time for the Christmas Market in Rotunda Park again. As usual we will be having a raffle for a Christmas hamper and we ask for your support to sell the raffle tickets included with this newsletter and to contribute to the hamper’s contents. The Christmas Hamper ha been a feature at the November market and people who have been lucky enough to win it in the past have been very pleased with the large box of goodies that arrive to start the festive season off with a bang. Our November Market is our main fundraiser and enables us to pay the bills! In the past the amount raised is about $1,000 and we are hoping for a similar result this year.
