NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 1999 OCTOBER MEETING Due to the
unavoidable absence of several members, the October meeting was cancelled and
Due apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced. Now our November commitments are
approaching quickly and arrangements are being made for the Market Day, CHHA
Family History Expo at Ballarat and the November evening meeting with John Tully
as our guest speaker. NOVEMBER MARKET DAY November 20 at Rotunda Park from 8.00am. This is our main Fund raiser for the year and so help is sought to keep up the tradition! Prior to the event the Christmas Hamper is being arranged and Giselle will gratefully accept donations of goods. The last hamper was a beauty as Janet can verify (she was the lucky winner) and we would like to have a similar hamper to raffle. We already have a Christmas cake promised but donations of shortbread, wine, ham, Christmas crackers, nuts etc could be brought to the November meeting and we need helpers and donations of saleable goods on the day. Please come, too, with ideas on how you would like to celebrate the end of our year. For the last couple of years we have met at the Rotunda Park for lunch on one of our usual Mondays. What do you think? NEWSTEAD HERITAGE STUDY Copies of the Volume 1 of the Study - Environmental History - are now available at $20 each. Volume 2, which lists the 803 sites to be examined under Stage 2 of the Study, is available on request and would probably cost about $12. Please let Dawn Angliss know if you would like to buy a copy of either volume. CHHA FAMILY HISTORY EXPO This annual
event at the Ranger Barracks, Curtis Street Ballarat, has had displays by many
historical societies of our area (Bacchus Marsh to Maryborough and Cape Clear to
Maldon) but not Newstead for a while. As we have significant records and data to
offer, it was decided that this year an effort would be made to participate. The
theme this year is Historic Homes and Garden Family Expo and appropriate photos
from our collection will be used to mount a display. Reference books and
computers will be taken to research any requests that are received. It runs from
10.00 am to 4.30pm on November 6 & 7 and costs $3.00 to enter. NOVEMBER MEETING John Tully has
agreed to be our guest speaker at our November meeting. To give a large number
of people the opportunity of attending it has been decided to have the meeting
at 8.00pm November 15 at the courthouse. John lives at Dunolly and is the author
of ”Djadja Wurrung Language of Central Victoria”. He will provide us with
information on the original inhabitants of our area whose history is often
overlooked. Members of other historical societies have been invited. NEXT MONDAY Next Monday
November 1, Rosalie Jacobs, one of our Melbourne members, will be attending the
Courthouse to present memorabilia of the Rev John Sutherland who was an early
Presbyterian minister of Newstead. ”COURT IN THE ACT” Congratulations
to the members of NAPE who presented ”Court in the Act” in the Courthouse
for 4 performances during October. We were aware of the effort that was being
put in over the preceding months but were still amazed at the talent that
produced the show. The original music and script, the performances and work of
transforming the Courthouse and surroundings were top class and deserving of
much praise. Our society has a great deal to be thankful for and we are looking
forward to the repeat performances or next show with anticipation. We have just
learned that there will be repeat performances - on Friday December 3 and
Saturday December 4, both at 8.00pm. If you would like to come please telephone
Bev Foreman on 5476 2211 as soon as you can, as we believe there will be a rush
on the tickets. EXCURSION TO THE BYRON REEF MINES AND CAPTAINS GULLY After meeting
at Mingus Crossing, the keen excursioners followed Jon Butler to the sites of
the North Byron, Byron Reef and South Byron mine sites. As well as seeing the
physical remains of the mines which are always interesting, Jon was able to fill
in the details of who lived along Captains Gully road and several stops were
made along the way to hear stories that brought the area to life. We finished at
the old Strathlea school where Knowles and Beverley Gray showed us their home
(once the old school) and produced a welcome cuppa. Next month we will join Jim
Trudgeon and Kevin Leathbridge who have been prevailed upon to lead us around
Welshmans Reef and tell us their memories of the town. CHS SOCIAL EVENING Don’t forget
the invitation next February 7 at 6.00pm at the Former Courthouse in Goldsmith
Crescent. They will provide the barbecue and meat and each of us who attends to
take a salad and sweet to share. Other local historical groups will attend and
we will need to know numbers at the November meeting. FORTHCOMING VISIT We have
invited Frances Gladwin, Field Historian from the State Library, to visit us,
probably in early December. Frances will speak to us about conducting oral
history sessions. Those of you who have attempted to tape someone who has a
story to tell but is a bit reluctant will know what a difficult task it is. As
we hope to interview some of our older folk in conjunction with the Newstead
Heritage Walk it seems most appropriate to have Frances talk to us. We will
suggest Monday 13 December at 1.30pm. Please let Dawn know if you are interested
in being there. As this will
be our last Newsletter for the year we take this opportunity to thank you for
your support during the year and to wish you Seasons Greetings, even though it
seems far too early. We will resume
