MAY 2002 NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTIONS Thank
you to those of you who have sent in your subscriptions. If we don’t receive
them this month, we will assume that you do not wish to continue your membership
and will no longer send you a newsletter. If it has slipped your memory, the
subscriptions are $15 single membership, $25 family membership and if you
require the newsletter to be posted to you, please add $5. Thank you! RSL WHITE CROSSES A
clean up of a local shed has unearthed the white crosses used to be placed
around the war memorial on Anzac Day to remember the fallen from our district.
We feel there is concern in our community for these to be preserved and we are
looking at placing one complete cross on an honour board as well as the cross
pieces with names of all the rest. If you have any information about them we
would be interested in hearing from you. EXCURSION Our
last trip took us to the site of the old bluestone ruins of the Charlotte Plains
homestead. The story of the Simson brothers was told and the family cemetery and
an area where they placed bluestone blocks across the creek to wash the sheep
were also visited. Members from Carisbrook Historical Society joined us, showed
us the Bald Hill Cemetery and were able to explain the reason for it being
abandoned. We also visited the old Charlotte Plains Hotel and the site of the
school as well as the Havilah mine. Thanks to John Lawton for taking us to
Rodborough and Charlotte Plains – they were great days. Our next excursion
will be on June 3 leaving from the courthouse at 1.30 to visit the other side of
our district – Guildford. It is arranged that Frank Passalaqua will meet us
there and be our guide. DISPLAY A
visit from Isabel Russell has resulted in us having on display for two months,
the old mangle and washing machine that were in use at ”Meadow Bank’ by
members of the Butler family until perhaps the 1950’s. They have aroused quite
a bit of interest already among the members who have seen them and are well
worth a visit. We have been delighted to receive visitors who have been calling
at the courthouse to see the information and photos of the Butter Factory that
are on view. Our
next meeting will be at the courthouse at 1.30 on June 20th.
