NEWSLETTER MAY 2000 MAPS On several
occasions the need has arisen to have topographical maps of Newstead and the
surrounding areas. At the May meeting, permission was granted to purchase and
the Society now possesses copies of Newstead, Yandoit, Cairn Curran, Guildford,
Castlemaine and Maldon. CURRENT RESEARCH Work is
ongoing on the Heritage Walk for sites to be included in the brochure. It is on
occasions like this that old beliefs are questioned. The origins of the name
”Newstead” are currently being investigated and this has involved Liz Coady
going to the State Library to search old newspapers and Government Gazettes.
Watch this space! EXCURSION As a result of
a request for information, Barry and May Thornbury from Castlemaine are
interested in the South Nuggetty Mine site which is close to the BIow Mine
track. Also in this area are a few other mines mentioned by David Bannear in his
book of mines in this area. Therefore it has been decided to go for an excursion
on Monday afternoon next, 29th May meeting at the courthouse at 1.30 pm. Last
year members seemed to enjoy these mini-excursions that we had to mines in the
Welshmans Reef area, Thornhill Reef and Byron mines so it is to be hoped that
this one proves just as popular. SUBSCRIPTIONS Thanks to the
members who have paid their membership dues for the current year and a gentle
reminder again for those who haven’t! Single membership $15 Family membership
$25 plus $5 postage for those who have the newsletter posted. MONDAY MORNINGS It is very
gratifying to see the number of people on a Monday morning at the Courthouse. On
a typical morning, there is maintenance, research on the micro- film reader
being undertaken, several people entering data from old newspapers onto computer
as well as a person or two calling in to see what could be found in our archives
on their fore-bears. Thank you to all our helpers!
