JULY 2002 NEWSLETTER

COURTHOUSE UPDATE

This has been a relatively quiet month – no excursion and some absences by a few members. However things are back to normal, lots of work going on and an exciting excursion planned to the Yapeen area on August 12^th. We plan to meet at the courthouse at 1.30 and travel to Yapeen to meet Max Kay who will show us part of the old Shire of Newstead that may be ”new” to some of us. Last night, (July 16), Janet Trudgeon and Dawn Angliss attended Caroline’s Restaurant in Carisbrook where the Carisbrook Historical Society host their annual dinner. One feature of the night is a ”show and tell” segment. This is always very interesting and this time included new publications, an old boot (circa 1890) discovered under the floor of the Maryborough Society’s Walmsley House and magnificent old Punch and Judy puppets! Janet and I read from the newspaper articles of Madeline Hugo, the little lost girl, which has excited us of late. Further to the facts already known, it appears Daylesford Historical Society has a photo of Madeline that we hope to obtain. Last week, Di and Derek Reid, Brian Dieckmann and I travelled to Ballarat to a seminar on accessing the Public Record Office on line. This was a free offer that whetted our appetites to do more research!

Parks Victoria have acknowledged the conclusion of the restoration of the Thornhill Reef roasting kilns project and sent a certificate of appreciation for our input. Our thanks go to Derek Reid for his efforts!

At the recent July meeting, several people asked if we intended to repeat our celebratory evening that we held last year. The answer is yes! At this stage we intend to hold it on a Saturday night, in early September in the courthouse. Watch out for a date and more details in the next newsletter.

The termite damage in the doorframe on the magistrate’s bench has been repaired by John Neall and is awaiting a coat of paint. Our next concern is the electrical supply to our workroom. At the moment there is a chaotic tangle of leads and power boards and advice is being sought ways of making it safer.
