Athletes List For Meet At MSAC 12/07/09
A BRIEF
HISTORY OF METRO WEST DISTRICT
(Prior to 1993 was known as Number 1. District)
* In the metropolitan area of Melbourne there were seven
Metro Districts in 1961. Later, Districts were given numbers
one to seven, Although the No 7 district eventually dropped
out. At that time No 1 District consisted of the following
nine swimming clubs: Newport, Footscray, Sunshine, Maidstone,
Essendon, Oak Park, Broadmeadows, Pascoe Vale and Fawkner.
* The arrangement of six Metropolitan Districts continued
until 1993 when the Metropolitan Districts were revamped by
Swimming Victoria and reduced in number from six to four,
(Metro North, South, East and West) to alleviate a perceived
imbalance of numbers of clubs in each District. The No 1
District consequently became Metro West District. Since its
formation Metro West has seen of its clubs close down as
well as new clubs start up, or some just had a name change.
* In the
2004/2005 Season, Metro West comprised of
nineteen swimming clubs ranging in location
from Werribee from the south, all the way
around the western suburbs to Craigieburn in the north. Currently the swimming clubs in
Metro West are: Altona, Aqua Wolves, Brimbank, Broadmeadows,
Hume City, East Keilor, Essendon, Footscray, Laverton,
Links, Maidstone, Melton, Moonee Valley Aquatic, North West
Aquatic, Oak Park, Sunbury, Sunshine, Swimmers and Werribee.
* The District has always encouraged the development of its
swimmers by supporting them with awards and grants. Many of
the District's swimmers have gone on to represent their
clubs (and District) at State, National and International
levels.
