Art & Creative Writing

Art reaches into the beautiful aspects of life and we express it through the act of drawing or painting.

Those with mental illness are usually extremely creative and talented because they do not censor their dreams or imaginary world. Their art is highly innovative and amazing. Thus we have a legacy of brilliance born out of a world of difficulty and illness. There is often a wisdom present profoundly greater than seen with the average person. Our aim is to encourage you to reach your creative potential.

When the individual paints or draws a portrait he or she can touch upon the infinite contained within the individual by glimpsing the moral character and nature of the soul. The eyes and countenance of the sitter is an indication of the inner world of that person and in the act of artistic representation a depth of feeling is reached. This depth of feeling is seen in both the process itself and in the portrait, no matter how fundamental or simple. The mind of the artist can connect to the infinity of the beauty within another’s soul by copying his/her portrait. Art is very psychological.

Art is essential to life because it assesses the beauty or depth of suffering within the individual and how he/she perceives the world. We need art to create statements about the self and the world that go beyond what just the eye sees of the everyday. Through art we add to the depth of life to reveal its secrets and mysteries. The subjectivity of the individual artist develops our perceptions of reality and makes us aware of things usually unnoticed or unseen. This is seen in for example, pictures made of flowers that show sensitivity to the flower, where the artist’s own vision reveals something new and novel before our eyes. Reality is forever changed. The history of art, whether modern or realistic, shows us the multi-faceted nature of art and how reality is perceived in many different ways. This is the beauty and justification and necessity of art.

I encourage you to paint, draw and just do; to experience the process of creating your personal vision of reality. When you have finished the picture, stand back and notice the depth of your vision or imagination. It will surprise and delight you. You have enriched life with your own version of beauty through suffering. Your art also enriches others and we hope to show your art pieces on this site to share your visions, your pain, your ideas and enliven others and ourselves and the world. We wish to conquer or understand mental illness through the very positive act of artistic creation. Good luck with your inspirations!
