Background
The Society is located in Footscray, a suburb of Melbourne's Western Region, Victoria, Australia. The Footscray Historical Society Inc., formerly the City of Footscray Historical Society, was formed at a public meeting in 1968. Since then the society has worked tirelessly on a number of local fronts to record and preserve the history of the area. The Society has an active membership who take part in a range of activities to assist this endeavor.
Members of the Society are engaged in an on-going program to catalogue a variety of records of local and family interest.
Records such as rare book, business records and correspondence are held at the Society's headquarters at Ercildoune, built in 1876 as a branch of the National Bank of Australasia. The Society owns this historic building and has had the interior and exterior restored.
The Society also publishes original research on the history of Footscray and has recently produced a part of the photographic collection on CD Rom. Images of the West showcasing photographs, sketches and etchings from this collection.

The City of Footscray becomes the City of Maribrynong
Following amendments to the Local Government Act, the City of Footscray officially became the City of Maribrynong on 15th December 1994. The Footscray Historical Society actively collects and researches the history of the suburbs within the City of Maribyrnong. These are Braybrook, Footscray, Kingsville, Maidstone, Maribyrnong, Seddon, West Footscray, Tottenham, and Yarraville.For more details on the location of the City of Maribrynong and what was the City of Footscray go to:
