Mikä on Suomi-koulu ?

Melbournen Suomi-koulu on toiminut jatkuvasti vuodesta 1993 lähtien palvellen suomalaisen taustan omaavia kouluikäisiä lapsia.

Suomi-koulu saa apurahaa Suomen Opetusministeriöltä. Loppurahoitus tulee lukukausimaksuista sekä omavarainhankinnasta. Koulun toiminnasta vastaa vanhempainyhdistys.

Oppilaat ovat kahdessa ryhmässä:

• 4-7 vuotiaat 'pienet' ja
• 8-18 vuotiaat 'isot'

Perinteisen kieltenopiskelun ohella koulussa askarrellaan, pelataan pelejä, vietetään juhlapäiviä ja järjestetään joka vuosi viikonloppuleiri.

Lapset viihtyvät koulun välittömässä ja ystävällisessä ilmapiirissä, joka antaa heille oivan tilaisuuden ystävystyä toisten suomalaislasten kanssa. Koulu on myös mukava seurustelupaikka vanhemmille, jos he näin haluavat.

What is Finnish School ?

Finnish School of Melbourne has been operating continuously since 1993. It is an after-hours ethnic school for both pre-school and school aged (up to age 15) children with a Finnish background.

The objective of school is to help the children read, write and speak Finnish - as well as to give them an understanding of the Finnish culture.

The funding comes from the Education Dept of Finland, term fees and fundraising. The school is run by the Parent Council.

The school is currently running two classes:

• 4-7 year-olds, and
• 8-18 year-olds

As well as the language education itself the school involves the children in art and craft, games, cultural celebrations and an annual school camp - in Finnish, of course.

Finnish School is a unique opportunity for the children to meet and spend time with other kids of similar background - to make friends as well as learn, in casual relaxed environment.

Whilst the children are getting a gift of life-time - a second language - the parents can maintain their ties to Finland through a chance to socialise with other parents.

Every other Saturday 10.00 am - 1.00 pm during school terms
