No ABC?? No Way!!

No More ABC? You Must be Joking!

It’s no joke. Just see what ABC Chairman, Donald McDonald had to say to the National Press Club on 1 June 2005: “Five times the ABC has requested additional funds for various activities—continuing and new. Five times the ABC has been denied those requests, either in full or in part.”

The ABC’s ability to do its job is being eroded, slowly but surely. If you need further evidence, follow the links at the left, which demonstrate a number of different areas where we’re starting to see the effects of cost-cutting.

Now’s the time for all of us to join the fight to get more funds for the ABC. Why now? Because in May the Federal Budget will decide the ABC’s future.

January/February: ABC Releases Submission Publicly
February: Senate Estimates Committee hearing
May: Budget Day, the Government Decides

So now’s your chance to join in and make the biggest noise we’ve ever heard for the ABC. Let’s bombard our MPs with letters and emails!

Need some ideas for your letters? Use the No More ABC theme and follow the  No More …  links at the left, which will take you to pages containing key facts you can quote about how funding cuts are already impacting on areas within the ABC.

To make it easier for you to send emails to MPs, the Writing Your Letter page provides some hints and information on where to send letters and shows you an easy way to generate emails to politicians.

newURGENT! The following is a message from Gary Cook, President of the FABC in NSW. Note that the Cabinet budget meeting to which it refers is next Tuesday, 28 March!

Dear Friend of the ABC

A message from GetUp, a National Campaigning Network, with whom we are working closely to bring to your attention and that of as many Australians as possible the urgency of sending a strong message to the government regarding the sorry state of ABC funding. Please note the urgency of acting. It is imperative that you and as many of our members as possible sign this petition and it will be presented to the main players.

Don’t rest there! Ask your friends and relatives to join in. If they don’t have access to the internet, they will know someone who has or they can visit their local library.

Click on the link and act straight away—don’t leave it until it is too late for the ABC.

Dear friends,

We are at a turning point in the future of a fundamental and cherished Australian institution, the ABC. Right now, the Cabinet’s budget committee is deciding the ABC’s funding for the next three years. Their next meeting is on Tuesday [28 March].

As it stands, the ABC is $264 million poorer in real terms today than it was 20 years ago. The programs we rely on—from independent news and current and affairs to quality children’s content—are under extreme pressure. In a very real sense, the integrity of the ABC is now at stake.

Sign this petition to restore the ABC’s funding. We need to act now before it’s too late.

Let’s show politicians in Canberra that the ABC’s owners—the public—are prepared to stand up and defend it. For this to work, every signature counts. We’ve set a goal of 10,000 signatures. Will you—and your friends and colleagues—help us get there?

That’s only a few days to get 10,000 people to stand up for the ABC and for public-driven, not profit-driven, Australian media.
