OUR COLLECTION

See also our page listing Indexes available at the Courthouse Museum

Book Collection - We have a good collection of local history publications, covering school, club, church histories, etc. The catalogue is available online through the RHSV website. Go to  http://www.historyvictoria.org.au/online.htm  and log on to the Victorian Local History Database.   Put "VESS" in the box labelled "Society", and you can seach our catalogue.  Records are added progressively.

Many of the books in our collection are also held in the Local History Room of the Sam Merrifiel Library, Moonee Ponds.  Click here to check their catalogue:

Ephemera Collection
- programs, tickets, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, souvenirs, Theatre Programs.  The collection mainly roughly sorted in a vertical filing system, but cataloguing has commenced.  The items which have been catalogued can be located through the Victorian Local History Database, as described above.

Manuscript Collection List of holdings

Photo Collection - In November 2006 we had more than 2000 catalogued and indexed photographs in our collection.  Most photos are available for copying to bona fide local or family history researchers, subject to the usual copyright and reproduction restrictions.

Real Estate Plan Collection - we have a very good collection of real estate subdivisional plans for the district in this State.  The earliest plans date to the 1880s. Indexed.  These records are now searchable on the Victorian Local History Database - Put "VESS" in the box labelled "Society", and you can seach our catalogue.  Records are added progressively.

Community News Photo Negative Collection,
circa 1987-1998
- there is no index, but negatives are organised in rough date order, with an inventory of contents for each volume.

Place of Deposit for secondary Council records.  The Essendon Historical Society Courthouse Museum has been designated as a Place of Deposit for secondary council records (ie, those not required by the Public Records Office Victoria.)  We have some minor holdings from the former City of Essendon, for which cataloguing is not yet commenced.  Return to this webpage for updates.
