A Glossary of Some of those Forestry Terms

 

Buffer Strip - protective band of vegetation left beside sensitive areas (ie streams, roads)

Clearfelling - all trees (except 0-3 trees per hectare or per 2.47 acres) are removed

Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA) - a detailed research paper issued by the government of the current environmental and social status

Coupe - a single forest area of up to 40 hectares/99 acres in size where harvesting occurs

Filter Strip - narrow strip of ground left beside a drainage line, some strip trees may be felled

Forest Coupe Plan - a plan containing a map, schedule & specifications for a coupe

Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) - a plan developed by consultation between the Federal & State governments and interested/concerned parties regarding the sustainable use of our forests

Retained Trees - trees left standing that are either for habitat, seed source or later sawlogs

Residual Wood - felled vegetation that has no sawlog potential (defective or waste)

Salvage - is clear felled to allow recently fire damaged forest to regenerate as future sawlogs

Sawlog - valuable part of a tree that is straight & defect free, comes in A, B, C & D grades

Seed Tree System - all trees (except 5-9 trees/hectare for habitat & seed source) are felled

Thinning - removal of some trees to promote better sawlog growth in trees left standing

Water Supply Catchment - a catchment that supplies water for domestic purposes (the Enfield State Forest & Park supplies water for the Corangamite Catchment)

Wildlife Corridor - a strip of reserved vegetation for animal movement joining forest areas

Wood Utilization Plan (WUP) - a 3 year plan showing expectations of timber & chip quotas
