Baroque Opera: Dafne: The Italian Opera
Composed by Marco da Gagliano
Venue: St. Ambrose Hall , Tickets: $50
full / $45 conc
------ & Paul McMahon,
with Accademia Arcadia and Ensemble Gombert,
stage direction by Rodney Hall; music direction
John O'Donnell
Opera was in its infancy when Florentine composer
Marco da Gagliano entertained the Mantuan court with his masterpiece Dafne
in 1608.Based on Ovid's story of a maiden who turns herself into a laurel
tree rather than fall prey to the advances of Apollo, Dafne is an outstanding
example of the new musical style that swept through Italy and eventually
the whole of Europe during the 17th century, a style we now call Baroque.
In this quattrocentennial production three of
Australia's leading singers - Sara Macliver, Sally-Anne Russell
and Paul McMahon - join forces with Ensemble Gombert and Accademia
Arcadia. Stage direction by celebrated writer Rodney Hall, music direction
by John O'Donnell. The production also features a fire-breathing dragon
made right here in Woodend by Steve Scott.dr

English lute music from its birth in the sixteenth century to its
heyday in the court of Elizabeth I. This fascinating program includes works

playing Recorders and baroque violin
and launch of a CD they made in an
historic church in Tuscany 2006
Thursday 19th April 6pm
Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne,
Swanston St, Parkville
The CD, "Concert à Deux, an acoustical
pilgrimage" was recorded in the beautiful church of Santa Maria Nuova which
lies nestled into the hillside just outside the walls of Cortona in Italy.
Its high ceilings capped by a dome, stone walls and floor, created a lush
acoustical space which allowed the gut strings of the baroque violin, viola
da gamba and the wooden pipe of the recorder to resonate freely.
In this space the intimacy of two-part music
could be enhanced and a connection felt with auditors of the past.

Choir of Newman College Concert Series, Concert
No. 1
Actus Tragicus, Newman College Chapel,
Sunday, March 18 at 2:30pm
The Choir of Newman College will commence its
sixth Concert Series with a performance of Passiontide cantatas for soloists,
choir and Baroque orchestra. Actus Tragicus features works by Johann
Sebastian Bach, Johann Christoph Bach, Telemann, Schütz, Schein and
Buxtehude. Two highlights of the program are J.S. Bach's funeral
cantata, Actus Tragicus, and the extraordinary cantata for five violas
da gamba and soloists from Membra Jesu Nostri by Dieterich Buxtehude, whose
300th anniversary is celebrated this year.
Accompanying the choir will be an orchestra
of period instruments including the members of Consort Eclectus,
a widely-acclaimed Australian ensemble of viol players. The viol
is a rare and ornate Baroque string instrument, whose sonorous sounds were
reserved by composers like J.S. Bach for moments of heightened emotion.
Featured amongst the soloists are the countertenor,
Dean Sky-Lucas, the soprano, Leoma Dyke, the tenor, Christopher Nye and
the basses, Grantley McDonald and John Weretka.

No
single building has been responsible for the inspiration of composers,
and the development of music more than the imposing Basilica San Marco
in Venice. The stunning music written to take advantage of the accoustics
and spatially-separated balconies and choir lofts led to the Venetian polychoral
style - music written for multiple choirs and instrumental groups for grand
effect. This style not only became popular all over Europe, but defined,
in part, the shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque era.
Hear
glorious works by successive Maestri di Capella at San Marco; including
Adrian Willaert, Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Giovanni Croce, and Claudio

Lost
Vivaldi work to have Australian premiere at University of Melbourne
The
Australian premiere of Antonio Vivaldi's lost work Dixit Dominus - discovered
to international acclaim last year by University of Melbourne musicologist
Dr Jan Stockigt - will be held in Newman College Chapel at the University
of Melbourne on Sunday 30 April.
The
work, an 11-movement piece of sacred music for choir and orchestra, was
discovered by Dr Stockigt in the Saxon State Library in Dresden.
It had for some centuries been misattributed to the composer Baldassarre
Galuppi.
Dr
Stockigt detected the irregularity in the attribution and correctly identified
the real composer to be Vivaldi.
The
acknowledgement of Vivaldi's authorship is the most important Vivaldi discovery
in a generation, according to the University's former Dean of Music and
Assistant Vice-Chancellor (University Relations) Professor Warren Bebbington.
