Plucked Strings Continuo Workshop
Conducted by Rosemary Hodgson, July 2003We had a large turn out of players, singers and listeners to explore the art of continuo accompaniment to vocal music of the 17th century. The workshop was conducted by well-known Melbourne lutenist, Rosemary Hodgson. Soprano, Sue Baker, was our vocal soloist for the focal piece of the workshop, Caccini's famous song from his "Le Nuove musiche" (1601), Amarilli mia bella. This piece was selected as it is also available in a contemporary "arrangement" for lute accompaniment in Robert Dowland's " A Musical Banquet". It gave us insight into how a lute would realise a figured bass, and helped explore the difference between the lute and the eclipsing theorbo practices of the time.
