WHY?
The prevention
of war is the most essential task for securing the survival of humanity
and the continued development of civilization. CICD works towards
abolishing nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction. We believe
that security cannot be enforced by ever greater numbers of more
sophisticated weapons. Real security comes with jobs, steady food
supplies, homes, clean water, warmth, education and health care,
democracy and human rights. continued development of civilization.
The threat and/or use of force in
international disputes must be replaced by negotiations for mutual and
balanced disarmament.
The United Nation's Human Development Report said
that `the greatest threats to human society in the post Cold War era
lie not in conflict between nations, but in conflicts within nations
originating in socio-economic deprivation and disparities...security
lies in development, not in arms'.
Military spending is rising in all countries and
many new weapons are being researched, developed and deployed including
mini-nuclear weapons for use in regional conflicts, weapons using
uranium and non-lethal weapons for use in civil unrest. Also the United
States National Missile Defence system will breach international
treaties governing missiles and space.
