During the early days of Black Women's Action in Education Foundation, renowned Aboriginal artist, Ray Meeks, offered to create a logo for us which reflected our efforts. The Foundations aims were to encourage Black women to aspire to academic heights in areas to which we had not previously had access - to throw aside the barriers and break down the doors if necessary. The smart sharp woman who appeared in our original logo certainly embodied our ethos. While moving on from this logo, we highlight that we acknowledge our roots and respect the old. In recognition of the fact that BWAEF has enjoyed many enormous achievements and successes in its quest for academic excellence and that we have enabled a solid group of Black women high achievers, we wanted to add to our original statement, and Bronwyn Bancroft picked up our challenge to design a logo which would carry us through into 2000 and beyond.
In our new logo, we have more than one Black woman, and indeed the women depicted reflect where we are today - at every point along the way. Black women are shown here in many postures: leading the way, pointing forwards in the direction we wish to go, and with hands clasped to assist each other, even holding each other aloft as well as basking in the glory of the achievements of one another. Bronwyn Bancroft further created a multi-hued artwork to celebrate the achievements of BWAEF. The theme of this artpiece, which is both dream-like and futuristic, is intended to illustrate the heights reached by our aspirants and the infinite possibilities we have ahead in our future. Portions of this gift adorn the front cover of this publication, and which the Foundation also intends to use on its stationery. |
