Nearby Attractions Within an hour's drive of Brucknell Park Scout Camp (which is in the Shipwreck Coast Region of South Western Victoria) are more natural attractions than any other region in Australia. Under an hour places you in the centre of the Otways Region. 1.5 to 2 hours away are The Grampians, Portland, Ballarat, and Geelong Regions. Melbourne and Mount Gambier (in South Australia) are each about 2.5 to 3 hours away. General Information about the Shipwreck Coast Region The Shipwreck Coast was so named as 163 sailing ships were wrecked along the coast. The region boasts a spectacular coastline, old volcanoes & volcanic plains, limestone hills & valleys, spring fed creeks and streams, rich farmlands, pockets of natural bushland - Brucknell Park is nestled in one of these bush land pockets, great fishing - freshwater and saltwater, the largest lake in Victoria, more lakes within an hour than anywhere else in Victoria (or Australia?). There is even a lake with floating islands! Whales come from Antartica between July to September to calve at Logan's Beach, often coming within 100 metres of the shore & they are often visible from the beach or the viewing platform. Many historic towns including Warrnambool, Koroit, Port Fairy, Camperdown, Terang, Mortlake and Macarthur have their original streetscapes mainly intact. Most towns have Heritage Walks and / or Drives. The largest natural lake in Victoria, Lake Corangamite has 3 times the salt level of the sea yet has fish in it, including a freshwater fish. (It actually breeds in the salt water and then returns to fresh water streams to live). Within 15 Minutes Nullawarre The closest shops to Brucknell Park, Supermarket, Hardware, Resturant, Chiselers Studio, Public internet access point. Ralph Illidge Sanctuary Bush walking or a quiet stroll. Visit their Information Centre for more information. Timboon. A gorgeous town scattered over hills and valleys, somewhat reminiscent of the Dandenongs. It has Medical and Hospital facilities, Police, Vet, Golf Course, Heated Swimming Pool, P-12 School, Shopping, Berryworld. Out of town; A classified timber trestle railway bridge, Cheese Tasting at Timboon Cheese Within 30 Minutes The Beaches of the Southern Ocean. In this spectacular outdoor classroom you can watch the great whales, visit sites of terrible shipwrecks, study shore life in rock pools and sand dunes, watch the commercial fishing fleet unload its catch, and hear the legend of the Mahogany Ship. Peterborough At the mouth of the Curdies river and Estuary. Popular with swimmers and Golf with a view of the Coastline (on the edge). CheeseWorld Milk & Cheese Museum, near Allansford enroute to Warrnambool. Cheese tastings. Port Campbell The safe harbour where the Campbell Creek meets the sea, has a popular swimming beach. Surfing is a popular past time as well. Cobden Miniature Railway and Mini Golf Park. Cudgee Wildlife Park Feed the animals, as you get up close to them. Camperdown Lake Bullen Merri, Lake Gnotuk, Lake Purrumbete, Mount Leura, Golf Course Mount Leura is a scoria cone surrounding a dry volcanic crater. The lookout provides magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Hopkins Falls Waterfalls on the Hopkins River Terang Terang has a Golf Course, Shopping, Race Course, Harness Racing and a Caravan Park. Mt Noorat, an old volcano, is just a few minutes north of Terang. The township of Noorat is where Alan Marshall (of "I can jump puddles" fame) grew up and had many of his exploits. Warrnambool Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and 'Shipwrecked' Laser Light and Sound Show. Explore the history of the Shipwreck Coast. A fishing village come to life.
