What is a Cornish Bard?
In traditions dating back to at least the first century AD, Cornish Bards were the chief holders of the history and genealogies of the nations. In the 11th century these traditions died out, then in 1928 Henry Jenner re-established the "Gorseth" or meeting place. Each year the Bards of the Gorseth hold a traditional meeting in Cornwall It was at one of these gatherings Enda and George were made Cornish Bards. Today there are over a 1000 modern bards, 25 five in Australia, and nine in Victoria.
The "Gorseth" exists to maintain the national Celtic sprit of Cornwall and to give expression to it. It encourages the study of Cornish history and language, fosters Cornish literature, art and music and links Cornwall with other Celtic countries. It promotes a sprit of peace and cooperation among those who work for the honour of Cornwall.
Enda and George shown above were both given this honour for their efforts in promoting Cornish culture in Australia. Edna and George may be contacted via e-mail at: gellis@vtown.com.au or through the comments page of this website.
