The
most dangerous drug is silence
Australia's drug policy of
prohibition has been one of the most expensive failures in
Australian history. It costs Australian taxpayers at least $2
billion dollars and the lives of more than 500 people each year,
most of them young people. In attempting to enforce our drug laws,
Australia is following in the footsteps of the United States, a
nation which has jailed more of its own citizens than the Soviet
Union did in its darkest days of incarceration.
Prohibition is putting drug
profits in the hands of criminals and corrupting members of our
police forces. And because drug-dependent people often steal to pay
for their destructive habits, prohibition contributes to Australia's
high levels of crime.
Whether we like it or not, we
have to accept that drug use happens. It happens despite the massive
resources already committed to enforcing our drug laws. While
politicians argue about morality, prohibition continues to destroy
people's lives.
No matter how much money you
throw at it, prohibition just doesn't work. There has got to be a
better way.
The most powerful opinions in
Australia are still yours. We need to create a safer society for
ourselves and our children. With your voice and support, together we
can minimise the harm done by drugs.
Help build the
Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation!
The Australian Drug Law Reform
Foundation is an incorporated non-profit organisation which promotes
open debate on drug policy and provides information on alternatives
which reduce the harm, social costs and personal tragedies caused by
illicit drug use.
When you join the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation you will
recieve:
- four issues of Briefing Notes, a newsletter
which offers clear perspectives on drug policy and law reform in
Australia and throughout the world
- a new member's information kit
- information on the Foundation and its
projects
- issues papers outlining the case for drug
law reform
- practical information on how you can make
your voice heard
- access to the Foundation's resources and
library
- invitations to Foundation events
- a chance to strengthen our membership base
and contribute to the work of the Foundation
How will my
membership fee or donation help?
Your membership fee or
donation is greatly needed to help meet the costs of campaigning for
reform, providing educational material and to fund several important
research projects on the benefits and obstacles to drug law reform.
These projects include:
- analysing the costs and
benefits of Australia's current drug policies
- examining if and how
Australia's international treaties interfere with
harm-minimisation policies
- surveying the degree of
support for harm-minimisation drug policies
This important research is yet
to be conducted in Australia. It is vital if we are to argue that
drug law reforms are feasible and are supported by the Australian
people. But without your support, these research projects may not be
possible.
