Royal, which my great-great grandfather ran. Another connection with Francis
Belfield is Gustavus Vaughan Brooke whom you mention in your article. Both
actors came from Dublin and were great friends. G V Brooke drowned in 1866
while on a voyage back to Australia from England on the SS London. He
died trying to save other passengers when the ship sank 16 days out from port.
My great-great grandfather made his name at the
Queen's Theatre in Melbourne and made his first stage appearance in Sydney in
August 1850, at the age of 27. It was noted at the time that in addition to
being a very fair actor, he had a talent for writing plays which included The
Slave's Revenge, Retribution, Australian Assurance and The Old English
and Irish Gentlemen (The Romance of the Sydney Stage by Humphrey Hall
and Alfred J Cripps). He continued to write plays, as well as taking on many
acting roles, including the lead in a Sydney production of Othello. By
the time he arrived at Lamplough, he was in his late thirties, with five
children including my great-grandfather (also Francis) who was born in 1859, and
therefore a very young baby. Three more children were born between 1863 and
1867. "
